Changes Needed to Make School Useful for Kids
We need to make changes to school to make it more useful for our children.
Schools were invented to provide a structured and organized setting where students can learn and acquire knowledge and skills from educators.
The origins of school started in ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Where the focus was on imparting religious and philosophical teachings. However, the traditional school as we know it was developed in 1837. This is why it is not that surprising that the school system is no longer serving its purpose.
Over time, schools evolved to include more practical subjects such as reading, writing, and arithmetic which were deemed essential for functioning in society.
Schools also became important tools for socialization and preparing young people for adulthood by imparting knowledge and skills necessary for success.
Why should we make schools useful?
Today, schools should continue to serve this purpose. Schools should provide students with access to a wide range of knowledge and skills. Helping them to develop critical thinking abilities, problem-solving skills, and creativity among other things.
However, the problem today is that the teaching methods and content taught are no longer achieving their desired purpose. Technology allows students to learn independently a subject of their choice. In addition, the internet gives options that allow students to learn at their own pace and through their chosen media.
It is becoming increasingly hard for teachers to compete with the availability of online education. Teachers and students are struggling because the mission for school is now severely outdated. Students no longer have the motivation to learn at school. It is hard to create motivation to learn things they will actually not need in the future.
“Students learn too much of what they don’t need and not enough of what they do Need”
The school system is an essential component of modern society, providing children with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life. However, as times change, so must the school system in order to be more useful for our kids. Our children deserve to spend their time at school experiencing meaningful learning that will serve them in the future.
5 Basic Changes Needed In Our School System
1-More Focus on Individual Needs
The one size fits all approach in education is one of the biggest problems with the current school system. However, every child is unique and has different learning needs. Schools need to focus more on the individual needs of students, providing personalized learning experiences that meet their specific needs and interests.
Module learning and the added use of technology could make this possible.
It is important also not to lose sight of the importance of connection. In order to learn students need to be able to connect with their educator. Bringing play into the classroom as opposed to sitting and listening would certainly help with this.
2-More Emphasis on Real-World Skills
While traditional academic subjects like math and science are important, schools need to place more emphasis on real-world skills. This includes skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and collaboration. These skills are essential for success in the 21st-century workplace.
We need to favor the learning process instead of memorization. We also need to stop quantifying learning and focus on the growth and the process of learning.
3-More Practical Experience Would Make School Useful
Another way to make school more useful for kids is to provide more practical experience. This includes hands-on learning, internships, and apprenticeships. Practical experience is a great way for kids to learn real-world skills and gain valuable experience that will help them in their future careers.
Whatever they are learning at school should be to prepare them for the “real world.” Keeping this in mind students should be having “real world,” experiences to learn whenever possible.
4- More Technology Integration
Technology is an essential part of modern society, and schools need to integrate technology into their curriculum. This includes using online resources, educational apps, and other digital tools to enhance learning.
Technology can help make learning more engaging and interactive, providing kids with a more immersive learning experience. In addition, it can allow students to learn at their own pace and monitor their learning. Which would increase their motivation to learn.
5- More Mental Health Support
Mental health is an essential component of overall health, and schools need to provide more mental health support for students. This includes counseling services, support groups, and resources for mental health education.
The Child’s inner self needs to be taken into consideration during school interactions. A lot of students carry invisible backpacks full of emotional experiences and these impede their ability to learn.
The introduction of regular mindfulness practices would benefit students and teachers greatly. It would provide adequate downtime to recover from the social and academic pressures put on them.
By addressing mental health issues, schools can help students succeed academically and in life.
The school system needs to change in order to be more useful for our kids. This includes more focus on individual needs, more emphasis on real-world skills, more practical experience, more technology integration, and more mental health support.
By making these a priority as a society, we can help our kids succeed in school and in life. It is our responsibility as parents and teachers to be aware of these issues and to try and apply pressure for change. The first step is acknowledging there is an issue.
