Creating Meaningful Connection through Intentional Choices

Video Games: The Lesser Evil

Video Games: The Lesser Evil

Video games make up a prominent part of our entertainment these days. But perhaps they are the lesser evil compared to other forms. I know a lot of parents express concern about the amount of screen time their kids are exposed to these days. I do think it is necessary to set a limit on the amount of screen time your kids have daily.

That being said, It is fairly inevitable that kids will spend time on screens these days. Fighting it usually just creates unnecessary battles. What I want to suggest is that video games are the lesser evil compared to other types of screen entertainment. Perhaps embracing them is a better approach than banning them altogether.

In recent years, video games have become an integral part of the lives of many children. While concerns about the potential negative effects of excessive gaming have been raised, it is important to recognize that video games in reasonable amounts also offer numerous positive benefits. Far from being mere entertainment, video games can foster critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, social skills, and even physical coordination

Enhancing Cognitive Skills

Video games often require players to strategize, plan and make quick decisions in dynamic environments. These mental challenges can help children develop cognitive skills such as problem-solving, logic, spatial reasoning, and memory.

Whether it’s figuring out complex puzzles, navigating mazes, or managing resources in strategy games, the cognitive demands of video games can sharpen a child’s mind. It can improve their ability to think critically and analytically.

Many types of modern businesses use simulators these days to help employees gain experience. I remember going to play paintball with some friends who were constantly playing first-shooter games. Although they had also never played paintball they knew how to position themselves to be able to shoot the enemy without being seen. A skill they had learned while playing video games.

Many pilots use simulators to limit flight risks to improve their skills. In a similar fashion, simulators for operations now exist in medical labs. The use of video games for entertainment, skill-building, and learning is a quickly evolving field. All evidence points towards more technology use and not less in the future.

If the concept of visualization often used by athletes can enhance their performance then there is no doubt that simulations using video games can do the same or more.

Encouraging Creativity and Imagination

Many video games provide immersive and imaginative worlds that inspire creativity in children. Games with open-ended gameplay or building mechanics allow kids to express themselves and unleash their creativity.

Whether it’s designing structures in sandbox games or creating unique characters in role-playing games, video games provide a platform for children to explore their artistic side and develop their imagination.

Games like Minecraft are starting to develop alternatives that are STEM based or education based. Minecraft Education, is an example of this. It is a version where you can use basic Minecraft games to learn different school concepts. At school my kids were using it to combine various elements to see what they would make. A way more practical way of teaching particle theory than using a textbook.

Promotes Social Interactions and Collaboration

Contrary to the stereotype of gamers being isolated individuals, video games can actually facilitate social interaction and teamwork. Multiplayer games, whether played locally or online, encourage children to collaborate, communicate, and work together towards a common goal. This cooperative aspect of gaming can strengthen social bonds, teach effective communication, and foster teamwork skills in an interactive and enjoyable manner.

In addition, children who may struggle with face-to-face interactions may find that they can connect online more easily. Eventually, they gain confidence and this can transfer into their daily interactions with others face-to-face.

Developing Digital Literacy and Technological Proficiency

In today’s digital age, proficiency in technology is crucial for future success. Video games offer a practical avenue for children to develop their digital literacy skills. Through gaming, kids learn to navigate complex user interfaces, adapt to new technologies, and become familiar with various software and hardware components.

This early exposure to technology can lay the foundation for future digital competence. It can also open doors to potential careers in the ever-expanding field of technology.

Their ability to use various platforms to connect, create and share their video game experiences means they can become expert communicators in the virtual world.

I’ve seen kids who are fairly unpopular in some classes become the center of attention. This is a result of their proficiency at certain games. Kids have online lives today and their online presence can win them points with their peers in the “real world.”

Building Resilience and Perseverance

Video games often present challenges and obstacles that require persistence and resilience to overcome. Whether it’s conquering a difficult boss, completing a challenging level, or achieving high scores, gaming teaches children the value of perseverance and the rewards that come with it. By facing and overcoming setbacks in virtual worlds, kids can develop resilience. They learn from failure and apply these skills to real-life situations.

It is obvious that we are far from the Nintendo platform where Mario only had three lives and you would have to start all over again. However, it still remains that gamers who get through a level (even with cheat codes) had to persevere to get there.

What They Play is as Important as How Often in Order to Ensure Video Games are the Lesser Evil

The amount of time played and the type of gameplay is a crucial choice. Parents often come to me with worries about the violent games their children play. They worry that it will make them violent. The opposite is actually true as long as the game is age appropriate.

When I boxed competitively that was a common misconception. People were always shocked to know that I was a boxer because I didn;t seem like a violent or aggressive person. I can confirm that I am not and the desire to hurt someone else was never the point of boxing. The gym I use to train at had a very strict policy of aggression in and out of the gym. Being in that environment taught me that boxers were less likely to get in a fight because they exhibited discipline and were able to offload their accumulated energy in a healthy way.

Video games can be the same for kids. It can be an outlet for them to blow off some steam instead of accumulating it and expressing it in unhealthy ways. Playing is a really healthy way of bonding with your child.

When to Worry about Your Childs’s Video Game Habits

While gaming can offer immersive experiences and enjoyment, it is crucial to be aware of the potential negative impacts excessive video game play can have. As parents and educators, it is essential to understand these potential drawbacks. Finding a balance that promotes healthy development and well-being is crucial.

One of the primary concerns associated with excessive video game play is the sedentary lifestyle it often promotes. Sitting for extended periods can lead to a lack of physical activity. Which can contribute to obesity, musculoskeletal issues, and other health problems. Encouraging children to engage in regular physical activity, balancing screen time with outdoor play, and promoting a healthy lifestyle can help mitigate these risks.

Additionally, gaming addiction can negatively impact academic performance, disrupt sleep patterns, and lead to attention and concentration difficulties. Establishing clear boundaries, setting time limits, and encouraging a variety of activities can help promote a well-rounded development in children.

Connect and Get Involved

The best way to monitor what your child is playing and how much is to demonstrate interest. Ask questions, sit, and watch them play. Recognize the positive side of video games instead of making them feel bad for enjoying this entertainment. Ensure that they are playing enough but not too much!

Don’t underestimate how much kids appreciate adults being interested in what they enjoy. Videogames can give your child an opportunity to show an adult how something works. This is a great way for them to build confidence and for you to bond.

Let Them Enjoy the Lesser Evil

While it’s essential to maintain a balanced approach to gaming and monitor screen time, the positive aspects of video games for children should not be overlooked.

When played responsibly, video games can be a source of learning, creativity, and social development. They can enhance cognitive abilities, encourage imagination, foster social interaction, promote digital literacy, and build resilience.

By understanding and harnessing the positive side of video games, parents and educators can help children leverage their gaming experiences for personal growth.
